The story of Antonio Calderara and a selection of his contemporary artist friends
The Calderara Collection (The Antonio and Carmela Calderara Foundation), conceived and built by the painter Antonio Calderara (Abbiategrasso 1903 - Vacciago di Ameno 1978) in his 17th-century home studio in Vacciago, comprises 327 works of contemporary painting and sculpture, 56 by Calderara himself and 271 by 133 European and non-European artists linked to him by friendship, esteem, or research.
The collection offers comprehensive documentation of the international avant-garde movements of the 1950s and 1960s, focusing on geometric abstractionism, programmed and kinetic art, op art, and visual poetry. Some aspects of the historical avant-gardes are also represented.
Calderara's art is illustrated on a floor dedicated to him, with works that well represent the breadth and richness of the artist's artistic production, from the figurative to the abstract period.
