10,000 years of history in the land of the Lepontians
The route offers archaeological finds from prehistoric times (Neolithic, Copper Age, Bronze Age), with the stone industry of Mergozzo from other Ossola contexts and ceramic materials from settlements in Verbano and Cusio. Sporadic finds an extraordinary set of warriors in Montecrestese representing the Early Iron Age. The Late Iron Age is well documented by the grave goods found in the necropolises of Carcegna and Crodo. The Roman Age is mainly illustrated by the material from the necropolises of Praviaccio and Cappella di Mergozzo, which allow us to understand funerary customs; finds from other contexts show some aspects of daily life and ancient production techniques. Finds from the Late Antique necropolis of Carcegna and the Early Medieval necropolis of San Giovanni in Montorfano complete the itinerary, offering a glimpse of the Christianisation of the area. A palaeontological showcase with fossils from the caves of Sambughetto has recently been opened.
