Bocciola Sanctuary
Set in a panoramic position by the street that leads from Vacciago to Ameno. The sanctuary is set on a little church which was built in the 16th century in the memorial of the apparition of the virgin. The actual building which works begun in 1754 and ends in 1834-43 presents a typical neoclassic structure: the internal part has a squared ground plan, a chore and a magnificent altar of white marble. To admire is the ancient painting of the virgin Maria. The walls and the vault are delicately decorated with splendid frescoes of Agostino Comerio (19th century). Regarding the old testament the frescoes of the virgin Maria and the birth of Jesus Christ have an oval form.
One curiosity: In the register of the sanctuary are collected the true “miracles”, ancient testimonials of what happened in the Madonna della Bocciola.
