“Alfredo Di Dio” Museum of Resistance

Valli dell'Ossola

The museum that displays local history intertwined with national, European, and world histories.

The four rooms of the "Alfredo Di Dio" Resistance Museum contain artefacts, photographs, and documents relating to the "Valtoce" and the "Grouping of Alfredo Di Dio Patriot Divisions" made up of autonomous divisions led by soldiers not affiliated with any political party.
The immense sacrifice of human lives and the support of the population made possible the liberation of Domodossola in September-October 1944, for which the Ossola Valleys were awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valour and Ornavasso received the Silver Medal for Civil Valour. After the battle of Ornavasso, fought in defence of the "Ossola Republic" along the Cadorna line, there was an exodus of partisans and civilians to Switzerland. However, the insurgents reorganised and resumed the fighting, providing the Allies with valuable intelligence services until the national liberation, which saw the partisans of the Grouping of Alfredo Di Dio Patriot Divisions, fight on the front lines, from Ossola to Milan, on 24 and 25 April 1945.
