Citrus Park
Cannero Riviera is a unique place in Piedmont for the presence of an incredible variety of citrus. The Citrus Park was born from the collaboration between the Municipality of Cannero and the Department of Tree Crops of the University of Turin aimed at recovering the agricultural tradition of this corner of the territory, located in the upper Lake Maggiore and historically linked to citrus cultivation thanks to the special microclimate conducive to the lush growth and maturation of this particular type of fruit. In addition to the many private gardens with trees laden with lemons, cedars and oranges, there is a public park, which wants to be a celebration of past life and typical productions, creating a perfect link with other local museums focused on ethnography and ancient crafts.
Visitors can walk through carefully arranged rows of local citrus and get closer to the world of their cultivation through explanatory panels and botanical cards available at the Citrusm Documentation Center, a small house set up as a mini-thematic museum. Among the most characteristic citrus is the Canarone, a cedrato lemon that seems to take its name from the fact of having been selected in Cannero. The municipal administration has also adopted a regulation for the enhancement and protection of local typical products and for the establishment of the De.C.O. (Municipal Denomination of Origin).
Every year in March, finally, takes place here the festival dedicated to citrus (“Gli Agrumi di Cannero Riviera”) which aims to bring out the consolidated activity spread in the country since 1500 of cultivation and care of citrus.
